The American Red Cross of Central MA Disaster Action Team assisted 34 people today following a 24-unit apartment building fire at 115 Pleasant Street in Worcester. The team arrived at the scene at 7:50 this morning and quickly set up a service center at All Saints Church on Irving Street. Twenty of the buildings 24 units were occupied .The Red Cross assisted 34 residents with financial resources for food as well as comforts kit and snacks and drinks. The landlord of the apartment building provided alternate shelter for many of the residents; others had an alternate place to stay or were not available at the scene.
The Red Cross will follow up with all residents in the coming days to assist with recovery.
The Red Cross of Central MA has responded to an unusual number of fires for this time of year. The Pleasant St. fire marks the 16th fire response since July 1 of this year. Just this weekend the chapter assisted 70 people as a result of fires. The Red Cross urges residents to adhere to fire safety tips which can be found at www.redcross.org/firesafety.
